The Story Behind Missy Lala

Kia orana! I’m Jasmin, but my family calls me Lala—a nickname my brother gave me when we were kids in the Cook Islands. Missy Lala is a celebration of my childhood, our island recipes, and the legacy of my mum’s famous doughnuts.

One day, my husband and I were craving that homemade donut flavour but couldn’t find anything close. I reached out to my sister Rose in the USA. Rose and our late mum had developed a doughnut recipe and she gave me this recipe to try. From there, I started cooking doughnuts and started refining the the recipe. Missy Lala was born.

Why Our Donuts (or Doughnuts) Are Different

After trial and error (and many kitchen messes!), I refined our family recipe into a dry donut premix that’s foolproof, fluffy, and stays soft even the next day. Most traditional Cook Islands doughnuts go dense when cold—not Missy Lala’s.

It’s low in sugar (great for diabetics like me), quick to make, and full of island flavour. Just add water and oil, fry, and enjoy.

  • 🍩 Traditional Cook Islands donuts & doughnuts

  • 🥥 Coconut rolls

  • 🍞 Māori fried bread

  • 💛 Low-sugar, guilt-free enjoyment

Legacy in every bite

Whether you spell it donut or doughnut, the joy is the same. Missy Lala is about family, culture, and sharing a piece of our Cook Islands heritage with the world. My dream is to see this mix on shelves across Aotearoa and beyond—to make island-style baking easy, delicious, and part of your family story too.
