For many Cook Islands families, donuts are more than just something sweet to eat. They are part of our culture, our childhood memories and the traditions passed down through generations.
And the good news? You don't need to be an experienced baker to make them at home.
With Missy Lala Baking Mix, making delicious homemade Cook Island donuts is easier than ever. All you need is water, oil and a little love.
What Are Cook Island Donuts?
Cook Island donuts are a much-loved Pacific Island treat, known for their golden exterior and soft, fluffy texture.
Unlike many Western-style donuts, which are shaped into rings, Cook Island donuts are often made as round or oval pieces of dough and fried until golden brown.
They are popular at family celebrations, community gatherings, markets and special occasions throughout the Cook Islands and New Zealand.
Every family has its own way of making them, and that's what makes these donuts so special.
A Family Recipe Made Simple
The story behind Missy Lala Baking Mix began with a family recipe passed down from my mother to my sister Rose and eventually to me.
Like many Cook Islands families, we grew up surrounded by food, laughter and the joy of sharing what we made.
But traditional donut making can take time, especially when you need to measure flour, sugar, yeast and other ingredients separately.
That's why I created Missy Lala Baking Mix.
I wanted to make it easier for anyone to enjoy homemade Cook Island donuts while keeping our family baking traditions alive.
One mix. Just add water and oil.
No need to measure lots of different dry ingredients. We've done that part for you.

Step 1: Prepare your dough
Place your Missy Lala Baking Mix into a large mixing bowl. Add the water and oil as directed on the packaging. Mix until a soft dough forms.
Step 2: Knead the dough
Knead until the dough becomes smooth and elastic. It should be soft and easy to work with.
Step 3: Let the dough rise
Cover your dough and leave it in a warm place to rise, following the instructions on your Missy Lala packet.
Step 4: Shape your donuts
Divide the dough into evenly sized portions and shape them into your preferred Cook Island donut style.
Step 5: Fry until golden
Heat your cooking oil to approximately 170–175°C. Carefully lower the donuts into the oil in small batches. Fry until golden brown on both sides and cooked through.
Step 6: Drain and enjoy
Remove the donuts from the oil and place them on a wire rack or paper towels to drain excess oil. Allow them to cool slightly before serving.
And there you have it – delicious homemade Cook Island donuts!
Tips for Making Soft and Fluffy Cook Island Donuts
1. Give your dough time to rise
Allowing the dough to rise properly helps create that beautiful, soft and fluffy texture.
2. Don't make your oil too hot
If the oil is too hot, your donuts may brown on the outside before cooking properly in the middle.
3. Avoid overcrowding the pot
Fry a few donuts at a time so they have enough room to cook evenly.
4. Keep your donut sizes consistent
Evenly sized donuts are easier to cook and help you achieve consistent results.
5. Enjoy them fresh
Cook Island donuts are especially delicious when they're freshly cooked and still warm.
